The International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) in conjunction with Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and Financial Stability Institute (FSI) held the IADI 8th Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland, from 21 to 24 September 2009. There were over 150 international delegates from more than 50 countries and regions participating in this event. These delegates included representatives of deposit insurance agencies, financial supervisors and central banks from different countries and the international organizations including International Monetary Fund (IMF), BIS, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and FSI. The main theme of the IADI 8th Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference was the “Core Principles for Effective Deposit Insurance Systems”. It was focusing on the 18 core principles jointly released by BCBS and IADI in June 2009. The core principles were categorized into 10 groups including setting objectives, mandates and powers, governance, safety-net participants and cross-border issues, membership and coverage, funding, public awareness, selected legal issues, failure resolution, and reimbursing depositors and recoveries. CDIC Acting Director of the International Relations & Research Office Yvonne Fan was invited to present the “Mandate and Powers” to the international audience. This Conference not only facilitated the exchange of experiences and information in deposit insurance field at the international level, but also has raised the international image and visibility of CDIC.
