Post-seminar Press Release Central Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) hosted the "International Seminar on Lessons and Implications in Managing the Global Financial Crisis" on October 22 to 23, 2009, at the Jingye Hall of the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance. The seminar aimed to give domestic financial institutions a deeper understanding of the current status of international financial markets and financial supervision trends, as well as strengthen awareness of risk management. Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) Vice Chairperson Jih-chu Lee was invited to deliver a Welcome Remarks at the seminar. In addition, the CDIC also invited prominent international experts in the financial field, including Mr. Donald E. Inscoe, Secretary General of International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI); Mr. Ilhyock Shim, Senior Economist of Bank for International Settlements; Mr. Karl Reitz, Capital Market Senior Specialist of U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC); Mr. Mutsuo Hatano, Vice Chair of IADI Executive Council and Deputy Governor of Deposit Insurance Corporation of Japan; and Mr. John F. Bovenzi, Partner of Oliver Wyman and former FDIC Chief Operation Officer, presenting in the seminar. The distinguished speakers shared their insights on international financial supervision trends and offered suggestions, from an international perspective, on financial practices and financial supervision mechanism. Among the moderators and discussants at the various seminar sessions were several well-known financial experts and scholars from Taiwan, including: Mr. Chen-min Hsu, President of Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance; Mr. Yin-hua Yeh, Commissioner of FSC; Mr. Schive Chi, Chairman of Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation; Mr. Shyan-Yuan Lee, Professor of the Department of Finance at National Taiwan University; Mr. Louis Chen, Dean and Professor of Chung Hua University; Mr. Ray-Beam Dawn, Dean of China University of Technology; Ms. Grace Chu, Chief Risk Officer of Shin Kong Financial Holding Co.; and CDIC President Howard N.H. Wang. The seminar was also attended by representatives of the FSC, Ministry of Finance, Central Bank, Council for Economic Planning and Development, domestic banks, the Taiwan branches of foreign banks, and Asian financial supervisory agencies and deposit insurance institutions. The total number of participants was 160. The seminar closed with a general discussion session with face-to-face exchanges between the seminar participants and speakers. The enthusiastic exchanges were highly beneficial to local banks in strengthening risk management and understanding international financial market developments and trends. The exchanges also will help Taiwan to further develop its financial supervision and deposit insurance system in line with international trends.
