The Central Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) will host the Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) Technical Assistance virtual Workshop of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) from 8 to 9 December 2021 on the theme of Resolution Issues in New-normal Times: Cooperation and Coordination in Handling Resolution of Troubled Banks during Pandemic / Global Warming. The CDIC invited distinguished speakers, Mr. Yury Isaev, Chair of the Executive Council of the IADI and President of Deposit Insurance Agency Russia as well as chairmen, chief executive officers and high ranking officials of deposit insurers from Japan, Korea, U.S.A., Canada, France and Malaysia. Dr. Tien-Mu Huang, Chairperson of the Financial Supervisory Commission, Taiwan and Mr. Roberto B. Tan, Acting Chairperson of the APRC will deliver opening remarks for the Workshop. Further, about 200 registrants from over 30 jurisdictions in Asia, Europe, America and Africa are expected to attend the Workshop. Representatives of Taiwan’s financial safety net will also participate in the two-day Workshop.
The Workshop consists of two main Sessions, where implementation of Core Principle 6 and 14 of the IADI Core Principles for Effective Deposit Insurance Systems will be discussed. Session 1 entitles Core Principle 6 A Deposit Insurer’s Role in Contingency Planning and Crisis Management, addressing that deposit insurers should have in place effective contingency planning and crisis management policies, procedure and scenario testing and response measures in the occurrence of significant incidents, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and global warming.
Session 2 focuses on Core Principle 14 Failure Resolution, exploring effective resolution frameworks for dealing with global and domestic systemically important banks as well as cooperation and coordination among financial safety net members for bank resolution arising from the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic and global warming.
At a time of growing emphasis on cross-border cooperation, hosting of the Workshop by the CDIC could help deposit insurers and financial safety net members establish their contingency planning and crisis management mechanisms as well as enhance their bank resolution mechanisms. In addition, the Workshop will also assist in elevating the CDIC’s professional reputation in the field of deposit insurance and strengthening substantive international exchanges and cooperation.
