CDIC President Michael Lin, Executive Vice President (EVP) William Su and the staff of the International Relations and Research Office (IRR) attended the Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) Annual Meeting, Technical Assistance Regional Workshop, and the International Conference of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) hosted by the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (IDIC) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia during mid-July 2017. There were nearly 100 participants from deposit insurers and financial supervisory agencies of 25 countries.
At the APRC 15th annual meeting, summary report of the Asia-Pacific regional strategic priorities and action plans were presented to all members. Members actively discussed the proposed action plans for implementing the strategic priorities. In addition, the activities and events held among APRC members in 2017 were updated and the deposit insurance organizations of Indonesia and Vietnam shared their new development of the respective deposit insurance systems as well as economic and financial sectors. During the meeting, CDIC EVP William Su, as the Chair of the IADI Core Principles and Research Council Committee (CPRC), made a presentation on the Overview and Update of CPRC Annual Work Plan for 2017/18 and welcomed further cooperation between CPRC and APRC. He also brought up several suggestions on the 17 action plans of the APRC Initiatives. APRC Regional Technical Assistance Workshop focused on three issues: dealing with problem banks, financial safety net arrangements, and resolution funding. Representatives from different countries were invited to share their experiences and participated in group discussions.
The theme of international conference was entitled Enhancing the DIC Roles through Resolution Activities. The conference consisted of three sessions, which mainly focused on the hottest issues concerned by deposit insurers including “transformation of deposit insurance: lessons learnt, a decade after global financial crisis”, “resolving financial crisis through bank restructuring program”, and “early intervention and crisis preparation: coordination challenges among financial safety net members”. The CDIC President Michael Lin was invited as a moderator of Session II “resolving financial crisis through bank restructuring program”.
During the APRC event, CDIC President Michael Lin had a bilateral meeting with the Chairman of Deposit Insurance of Vietnam Mr. Quang Huy Nguyen. In the meeting, they shared the restructuring issues of community financial institutions and further cooperation in the near future.
